#PolishMountain

Do you have 12 hours to spare and the inability to pick a nail polish colour? #PolishMountain may be the trend for you.

polish

#PolishMountain was a trend started by YouTuber Christine Rotenberg after she was challenged to use every nail polish colour she owned. It resulted with her painting 116 coats of nail polish, creating a polish mountain. It has sparked a lot of people wanting to experiment with the trend themselves.

Between each coat, the nail polish has to completely dry otherwise the final result ends up looking something slightly less than appealing. The photo below is Christine’s first attempt at the challenge, having applied 40 coats before giving up and restarting.

The trend has taken off, with the original video having over 15 million views at the time of writing!

Popular YouTuber Jenna Marbles decided to take this trend a step further, uploading a video of her doing 100 coats of nail polish, false eyelashes (50 per eye), foundation, liquid lipstick, spray tan and hairspray. After 4 days online, her video has reached over 5 million views, and has trended worldwide on social media platforms. polish mountain 3

So what do you think? Is this trend a waste of time or a new fashion statement? Would you ever try it?

Festival Style 2016

It’s that time of year again, where all the attendees of music festivals break out their flower crowns and head out to Coachella, Osheaga, Lollapalooza, Blues Fest and the like. If you’re in need of some style inspiration for this year, look no further – we’ve got you covered.

Hair

Let’s switch it up this year and ditch those flower crowns. Braids and buns are great for creating unique and gorgeous hairstyles.

They are especially cute when combined.

Makeup

Make your eyes sparkle with glitter, polka-dots and gemstones.

Combine the glitter and bun trends by applying glitter to your roots! Mix in glitter with hair gel to make it stick.

Try out colourful brows.

Nails

We are absolutely loving unicorn nails!

Feeling a little intimidated by these styles? No worries – book an appointment at Hair Republic Beauty Lounge for Hair, Makeup, Nails or all three and we’ll get you festival ready.

How to make your Eyelash Extensions work for you!

Eyelashes extensions give you the perfect looking lashes everyday. No need to struggle with mascara and clumping, they are ready as soon as you wake up! Just like the hair on our scalp, our eyelash hair goes through cycles. Understanding these cycles can help you understand when is the best time to get your extensions, how often to get them refilled, and why your eyelashes (both extensions and natural) may be falling out.

Eyelashes grow in three stages: anagen, catagen and telogen. Simply put, the anagen phase lasts 30-45 days and it is when eyelashes are still new and delicate. The catagen phase is when lashes are at their strongest, and is around 2-3 weeks long. During this phase the lash stops growing. Telogen is the final stage and it’s when lashes begin to fall out, and make room for new lashes. Every hair in your eyelashes is on it’s own cycle, so they won’t fall out all at once.

When you get eyelash extensions, they tend to follow a similar cycle. Eyelashes are applied to lashes in the catagen stage because they are strong enough to hold the extensions. From there, the extensions will follow the natural hair cycle, falling out when the lash is in the telogen stage.

Because lashes tend to stay in the catagen phase for 2-3 weeks before they begin to fall out, we recommend coming to get lash extensions filled, or touched up, in that same time frame. This allows lashes that have recently entered the catagen stage to be extended, to make up for gaps where lashes have fallen out.

To maximize your lash life, you should take makeup off every night (preventing breakage and drying out), eat well (to maximize the nutrients involved in hair growth) and choose only the best products to put on your face and lashes!

The B is Back

I want to talk about the bob for a minute. The bob – long, short and everything in between – has made a comeback in the hair world lately. Everywhere you look, whether it’s in pop culture or everyday real life, girls are opting to have their hair chop-chopped into a new, fresh, cropped style. I am one of those girls (who is taking baby-steps and currently has an “extra-extra-long bob” … okay it doesn’t really count as a bob but I’m getting there!).

I’m not the only one with shorter locks these days – check out all these celebs who are rocking it too!

Some are wearing their bob classic and short:

Some are opting for a ‘lob’ – a long bob:

So why are women everywhere flocking to salons to have their hair chopped? Is it for the arguably simpler maintenance? I for one have had to use way less shampoo and conditioner now that I’ve had 8 inches cut off, and brushing is so much easier. Or maybe it’s related to the newly revived feminist movement in the past couple of years – spearheaded (at least in the pop-culture world) by short-haired Emma Watson. The 20’s bob is after all a tell-tale symbol of female emancipation.

Whatever the reason, it’s happening – the bob is taking over. The results? We’re loving it.

Eliminating Hat Hair in 6 Simple Steps

Winter is in full swing here in Ottawa, which means everyone is bundling up to stay warm. Unfortunately with cute knitted headbands and patterned scarves comes static and frizzy hair. We have 6 tips to help you prevent and repair the effects of hat hair!

Image result for frizzy hat hair

Prevent

Avoid Wool Products

Wool causes friction against the hair creating damage and frizz. Look for hats that have a silk or satin lining to protect your hair from rubbing up against the harsh wool.

Change Your Hair Brush

Use a hair brush that has natural bristles, such as boar bristles. These brushes are similar to human hair so they cause less stress and less damage. As a bonus, natural bristles will also help add shine to your hair!

Static Guard

Spraying a little bit of static guard on your hands and rubbing it through the mid shafts and ends of your hair will help reduce any static caused by hats or scarves!

Repair

Fabric Softener Sheets

Running these sheets over your hair will eliminate the static. Carry some in your bag and slip off to the restroom when you arrive at your destination.

Hairspray

Carrying a travel sized hairspray in your bag will save you from many hair disasters. Spray a little bit in your hands and lightly smooth out the fly aways caused by your outerwear.

Hand Cream

As a last resort, hand cream is an excellent smoothing cream. Rub a pea sized amount of cream in your palms and smooth it over your hair, but avoid the roots. Applying hand cream directly to your roots will cause them to look greasy.

2016 Beauty Resolutions

It’s time for a new year, and that means brand new New Year Resolutions! Here are some beauty resolutions we recommend for you, that aren’t too difficult to keep.

#1. Pre-Book Your Appointments

Pre-booking your appointments is a great practice to start in 2016. Whether it’s for your Root Touch-Up, your Undercut Clean-Up, or your Bikini Wax, booking your next appointment after seeing your Stylist or Esthetician ensures you are saved a spot in the appointment book with them.

At Hair Republic, you can also reschedule your appointment, or cancel, if needed. Pre-booking with us is a way for you to get a future appointment with your favourite beautician!

#2. Get Face-Mapped

Stop wasting money on products not right for your skin. At Hair Republic we are proud to carry Dermalogica as our skin-care line and offer complimentary Face-Mapping for you to know what type of skin you have and which products it would benefit most from.

We also offer a 20 minute Microzone Facial that targets the skin repair you’re most in need of. With this particular facial you will also leave our Lounge with a months worth of Dermalogica products perfectly suited to your skin!

#3. Go Paraben, Sulfate and Cruelty Free

It’s better for the environment, it’s better for the animals and it’s better for you! At Hair Republic we carry lines like Kevin Murphy and Demes which are free of all three. Try out a Butter Me Up body butter by Demes and the Hydrate Me Masque by Kevin Murphy to get you through the cold and dry winter.

#4. Try Gel Polish Instead of Regular

At HR we carry O.P.I Gel Polish – it’s not acrylic, just a longer lasting polish that is cured under an LED light to make it extra strong. By choosing a Gel Manicure over regular polish, you’ll get around two weeks out of your polish. (Just no peeling it off!)

The gel manicure featured here is a gorgeous sparkle french tip by esthetician Angela Thok.

#5. Treat Yourself!

Try out something new that makes you feel good. We recommend having a Signature Facial done – ever had a face massage? Pair it with having a set of Elegant Lash Extensions applied – bye-bye messy mascara, hello flawless lashes!

Hair Republic Evolution

Hair Republic | Salon opened it’s doors to the people of Old Ottawa South in October of 2011. Since then it has built a dedicated clientele, a talented team and is preparing to enter the spa world by introducing a beauty lounge to their already successful salon.

For the past four years, Hair Republic and it’s team have not only built a reputation as a professional hair salon, but as a philanthropic business within the community. Michelle Nguyen (owner of Hair Republic | Salon) credits most of their success to the support they have received from the Old Ottawa South community. Hair Republic strives to give back to this community by  supporting other local businesses and participating in charity events within the area. Through the years, Hair Republic has participated in events such as the annual CHEO BBQ, Angel Hair Cut-A-Thon and the Every Leaf Counts campaign for the Hopewell School playground. The team at Hair Republic all care deeply about the charities and organizations they work with, and are always excited to volunteer their time and talent.

In addition to the fundraising and charity events they partake in, Hair Republic also partners with organizations in order to improve the salon environment. All artwork in the salon is done by local artists who are represented by IAM Management. Collections are showcased in the salon for three months to a year before new artwork comes in and another artist is presented. Not only does the artwork refresh the walls of the salon, but it gives artists a chance to show their work to a variety of people.

Hair Republic also closely partners with Green Circle Salons (GCS); an organization that works to ensure salons are reducing their impact on the environment by enforcing environmentally friendly procedures. In 2014, Hair Republic helped GCS keep 389,651 lbs. of waste from the environment in 2014. Hair Republic makes every effort to make sure the salon is as ‘green’ as possible, and this can be seen in the products they sell to the design of the workspace itself. The design for the new expansion will also do it’s best to make use of environmentally friendly techniques.

The Hair Republic | Beauty Lounge is designed to be a place for express spa services. The beauty lounge will offer a range of services (including facials, manicures and waxing) and be a social atmosphere for people to ‘relax on the run’. While most people would love the opportunity to relax at a spa for hours, the reality is that very few people have the time. The Beauty Lounge would be a place where people can go for their treatments before picking the kids up from school, during a lunch break or after class.

Hair Republic Photo.jpg

Michelle Nguyen first came up with the idea to expand the salon into a beauty lounge after a night of casual fine dining. Casual fine dining let’s customers experience all the elegance of fine dining while in the comfort of jeans. She was inspired to bring the high quality services of a day spa into the relaxed yet trendy environment of her salon.

To help with this spa expansion, Hair Republic enlisted the help of spa expert Tina Rodrigues. Tina has been in the spa industry for over 14 years. As someone who has been in the industry for a long time, Tina was excited to come to Hair Republic because of the creative environment they offer and the ability to help make custom treatments for the clientele.

Besides manicures and pedicures, spas are known for their incredible skin care treatments. When deciding which brand to work with, Michelle and Tina knew they had to pick the best products on the market. Voted number one in the industry for the past two years, Dermalogica seemed like a natural choice. Dermalogica uses a face mapping tool that allows each client to receive treatment and products personalized to their skin care needs. Dermalogica is one of the few skin care companies that considers skin care to be both a beauty and a health issue. Their face mapping tool connects different areas of the face (called zones) with potential internal health concerns, such as in the digestive system and liver. Many people forget that the skin is actually an organ, and that it’s health can be affected by the health of other internal organs, and how well we treat our bodies. Dermalogica focuses on healthy skin, and in order to ensure everyone’s skin is getting the best treatment possible, all products are made without any chemical fillers or ingredients that could potentially damage/irritate the skin.

The Hair Republic | Beauty Lounge is set to open on December 1st, 2015. While this expansion is an exciting endeavor, clients should not be worried about losing the classic Hair Republic environment. Hair Republic is, and will remain a comfortable, welcoming space for all clients.
